ENGG PROJECT-TELEPHONE as a REMOTE

The circuit given below is of a telephone operated DTMF remote. The circuit can be used to switch up to 9 devices using the keys 0 to 9 of the telephone. Digit 0 is used to switch the telephone system between remote switching mode and normal conversation mode. IC KT3170 (DTMF to BCD decoder) is used to decode the DTMF signals transmitted over the telephone line to corresponding BCD format. IC 74154 ( 4 to 16 demultiplexer) and IC CD4023 (dual D flip flop) is used to switch the device according to the receive DTMF signal.
The operation of the circuit is as follows. After hearing the ringtone from the phone at receiver end, press the 0 button of the remote phone. The IC1 will decode this as 1010.The pin 11 of IC2 will go low and after inversion by the NOT gate in IC3 it will be high. This will toggle the flip flop IC5a and the transistor Q1 will be switched on. This will make the relay K1 ON. The two contacts C1 and C2 of the relay K1 will be closed. C1 will form a 220 Ohm loop across the telephone line in order to disconnect the ringer from the telephone line (this condition is similar to taking the telephone receiver off hook).C2 will connect a 10KHz audio source to the telephone line in order to inform you that the system is now in the remote switch mode. Now if you press 1 on the transmitter phone, the IC1 will decode it as 0001 and the pin 2 of IC2 will go low. After inversion by the corresponding NOT gate inside IC3, it will be high. This will toggle flip flop IC5b and transistor Q2 will be switched ON. The relay will be energized and the device connected through its contacts gets switched. Pressing the 1 again will toggle the state of device. In the same ways Keys 2 to 9 on the transmitter phone can be used to toggle the state of the device connected to the channels O2 to O9. After switching is over, press the O key on the transmitter phone in order to toggle the flip flop IC5a to de-energize the relay K1.The 200 Ohm loop will be disconnected from the line, the 10 KHz audio source will be removed and the telephone receiver will be ready to receive new calls.

Notes.

• Assemble the circuit on a good quality PCB.
• Use 6V DC for powering the circuit.
• A simple NE555 based oscillator can be used as the 10 KHz audio source.
• All IC’s must be mounted on holders.
• The section drawn in red must be repeated eight times (not shown in circuit).
• In certain countries circuits like this cannot be connected to telephone line.I do not have any responsibility on the legal issues .

KT3170
The IC KT 3170 used here is a low power DTMF receiver IC from Samsung. The IC is fabricated using low power CMOS technology and can detect all the 16 standard DTMF tones. The DTMF signal received will be decoded to a BCD output for switching applications.
74154
74154 is a 4 line to 16 line decoder from national semiconductors. It decodes a 4 bit input code into one of 16 mutually exclusive outputs. Maximum supply voltage is 7V and normal power dissipation is around 175mW.
CD4049
CD4049 is a CMOS hex inverter from Texas Instruments. Each of the IC contains six NOT gates. Maximum supply voltage possible is 20V and each gate can drive up to two TTL loads.
CD4013
CD4013 is a CMOS dual D filp flop. Each flip flop has independent data, reset Q, Qbar, clock and set pins. The maximum possible supply voltage is 15V and the IC has high noise immunity.

Two new Kindle tablets

Online retailer Amazon reportedly has two new Kindle tablets in the works: a new and improved 7” Kindle Fire tablet and a bigger 10” tablet.

The 7” Kindle Fire reportedly features a “vastly improved” exterior design said technology blog BGR, which first reported that Amazon was

 

working on the tablets back in May.

“Our source says that the new models feature a metal casing in place of the current-generation model’s soft-touch plastic body. The back of the devices are said to include a chrome-look ‘rib’ that adds contrast against the black matte finish, and the feature reportedly improves the feel of the tablets and the appearance as well. This area of the new Kindle Fire models also houses the tablets’ speakers, we’re told,” wrote BGR.
The bigger 10” tablet, dubbed Hollywood, looks like a “thinner version of the first-generation iPad” devoid of front-facing buttons. It will run on a fast quad-core processor and has a front-facing camera.
While the iPad still rules supreme in the tablet market, Microsoft, Google and Amazon look like they are gearing up to put on a good fight in the coming years with launch of the Windows 8-powered Surface, and the Android-powered Nexus 7 and rumored new Kindle Fire tablets.

Sony’s Google TV set-top box

Sony’s NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV will go on sale in the US on July 22. A global release will follow in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Mexico and the UK. The set-top box was first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It enables

consumers to browse the Internet and to download apps from the Google Play Store on their existing TV. "Expanding the reach and interoperability of the powerful Android platform with Sony's smartphones, tablets and renowned Audio & Video products, we are proud to continue our relationship with Google through the introduction of the new Google TV set-top-box," said Phil Molyneux, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics. "Entertainment content is available through so many channels and sites, and Google TV helps consumers easily find what they want to watch, listen to or play using familiar search engine technology, enhancing the viewer experience. TV will never be the same."
Sony’s new Google TV enhanced NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player with voice search capabilities is also due to arrive on the market in time for the holiday season. The NSZ-GP9 will be priced at $299.
Both the NSZ-GP9 and the NSZ-GS7 come with a redesign remote control that features a QWERTY keyboard, a touch panel and three-axis motion sensors for playing games.
In February Samsung, the world’s top TV maker, launched its flagship ES8000 Smart TV in Korea. The high-end HDTV packs in next-generation features such as voice and gesture controls and the ability to recognize faces. The TV also comes with a smart evolution kit which enables users to upgrade the TV processor.
Meanwhile, Samsung is also said to be working on a new Google TV that will rival Sony’s existing Google TV and LG’s recently launched 3D-enabled Google TV. In February Kim Hyun-suk, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, told The Korea Herald Samsung plans to release the Google TV by the end of 2012.
The NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV will be available in the United Kingdom in July. The set-top box will then see a wider roll out in Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, and Mexico. The NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray Disc player with Google TV will be available from fall in the United States, followed later by Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Netherlands.
